Yet, in the Terrier Rouge region, women are more than 30 kilometers from the closest hospital, with no realistic access to prenatal, maternity, or postpartum care in safe and sterile conditions. Ninotte, a local Haitian and certified midwife, is committed to help solve these issues by providing care for women and infants inside of the new birth center. In 2016, Ninotte was gifted a piece of land by a local businessman who was impressed with her vision and tenacity. This is the piece of land on which the birth center is to be built. In preparation for the new building, she has conducted community meetings to inform residents of the goals of the project and to obtain feedback on community needs. Ninotte has also been leading sex education seminars and Traditional Birth Assistants training, as well as providing midwifery services out of a community center or even in-home, if necessary.

With your support, SowHope has already donated birthing supplies, such as a Doppler, an adult scale, an infant scale, a hemoglobin meter, a suturing kit, a blood pressure cuff kit, a head lamp, a bed for consultation, sheets and towels, gloves, and other miscellaneous supplies. These supplies are projected to serve 100-200 women even before the birth center is completed. The targeted completion date of the birth center build is late 2019.
The strategy of partnering with local leaders who use local solutions to solve local problems is a sustainable model that the Grace Birth Center project will follow. Even with limited funds, the work of each of our partners has proven to be extremely successful, empowering many women to learn skills, own businesses, and achieve prosperity they hadn’t been able to even hope for in the past. We believe the best way to alleviate poverty is through sustainable development by empowering local communities with tools, resources, and knowledge to produce sustainable results.
