“I am hopeless and tired.”

Speena spoke those words quietly, but they carried the weight of a life pushed to its breaking point.

Speena, a resilient mother of eight, worked long hours as a house cleaner, doing everything she could to keep her children’s spirits high even as her own hope was slipping away. Her eldest daughter needed regular medical care she couldn’t afford. Every day felt like a battle she was losing.

Her story is not unique. It is the daily reality for countless women in Afghanistan.

Five years after the 2021 regime change, women face deepening limitations. Education is banned. Employment is restricted. Basic freedoms have vanished. Mothers are fighting to keep their families alive while navigating illness, poverty, violence, and overwhelming fear.

And yet, even in this darkness, hope is still pushing through.

One of SowHope’s courageous partners has miraculously secured government approval for women to receive training, earn income, and access emotional support. Women are learning tailoring, shoemaking, and other small business skills. Some are gaining on-the-job experience through cash-for-work placements. Many are receiving counseling and trauma support — a rare and vital lifeline.

Through this project, Speena found hope. She learned tailoring skills, found emotional support, and rediscovered her strength. Speena is living proof of what’s possible. Today, she is a professional tailor with a steady income. She can pay for her daughter’s medical needs. She is living hope in action.
